Each Band will perform 2 pieces: The Required Test Piece and a Choice piece from the Territorial Choice List.

BEGINNING BAND

Beginning band would describe a group that either has novice players or hasn’t been in existence long. Level 1 AIES music would be a good indicator of this level as the young people learn to play big notes, listen to each other and figure out how to play in tune. Bands in this category should first have the approval of the DMD and not be looking to play a level 4 piece as their own choice. Developing young players is the name of the game for this category.

JUNIOR BAND

Junior bands would be those who have been established for a while and have players who are more advanced. Level 2 music in AIES should be the lowest that a junior band would play. They should be building on the skills learned as a beginning band member and be able to play in keys other than C and F as well as navigate more complicated rhythmic and harmonic styles. Again, the DMD should be able to advise group leaders as to the correct level and be willing to help them make the correct choice.

None of these should be about winning but developing skills to aid their respective corps in worship on Sunday mornings.

Beginning & Jr. Band Instrumentation

Eb Soprano Cornet, Bb Cornet, Bb Flugel Horn, Eb Alto (Tenor Horn), Bb Baritone, Bb Tenor Trombone, Eb Bass Trombone, Bb Euphonium, Eb Bass Tuba, Bb Bass Tuba, Snare & Bass Drums, Timpani and complete battery of percussion as required.  Groups may be smaller ensembles using the instruments above.

Age: 7-18 by June 1, 2024 – minimum 4 members + up to 2 adults5
